Total Emissions Reductions Through Environmental Stewardship

This chart depicts the emissions that are avoided through programs such as Puget Sound Energy's (PSE) Green Power voluntary purchase option, usage of City-owned EV charging stations, renewable energy installed (for more detail, see Solar Installations tab), and Island-wide composting and recycling programs. Hovering over each color bar will reveal more information.

Trees and Greenhouse Gas Savings

Trees provide many benefits such as shade, a pleasant natural environment, passive cooling of buildings. etc., but one of the most important is that trees remove and store CO2 from the atmosphere for long periods of time (acting as "Carbon Sinks") A dataset depicting 10 years of change in the Mercer Island tree canopy is under development. When available in 2018, it will quantify the approximate amount of carbon stored in the trees community-wide.
