Water Consumption

The northwest has done a good job in reducing indoor water consumption per household through efficient fixtures. However, this is counterbalanced during droughts or especially hot periods, or when population increases. As climate change increases the likelihood of droughts and excessive temperatures, keeping water consumption low is a growing challenge.

What is the Overall Water Consumption Per City?

Water consumption has increased over the years, likely due to recent unprecedented growth in total population and warm, hotter summers than decades past. On average, cities are using around 100 gallons per resident per day. However, this includes business use. With fewer businesses and a commuter population, Mercer Island shows a lower per resident consumption number.
